What Is Dubb and Who Is It For?
Dubb is a video email platform that helps you create and send personalized videos to individual prospects or clients. It returned to AppSumo in 2019 after an initial run in December 2018, this time with some new features including automation and campaign tools.
The key distinction with Dubb is that it's built for one-to-one video communication, not one-to-many broadcasting. If you need to send a quick personalized video to a prospect as part of a cold email strategy, or you want to send a client a personal update, Dubb is designed for exactly that. However, if you're distributing content to a wide audience, you're still better off with YouTube, Wistia, or Vimeo.
Think of it this way: Dubb shines when someone opens your email and sees a video thumbnail with their name on it. That personal touch can be a powerful conversion tool for sales teams and agencies that rely on building relationships.
Recording and Managing Videos
Getting started with Dubb is straightforward. You can record videos directly in your browser by clicking the plus button, use the Chrome extension, or upload pre-recorded videos from your computer. Once uploaded, you can manage your library from a simple video list view.
The editing capabilities are fairly limited. You can trim the beginning and end of a video, but there's no way to cut out a section in the middle. If you need anything beyond basic trimming, you'll want to edit your video externally before uploading. You can set custom thumbnails by scrubbing through the video and selecting a frame, add SRT files for closed captioning, and toggle autoplay.
Closed captioning support is worth calling out as a practical feature. With so many people watching videos on their phones with the sound off, having captions start automatically alongside an autoplaying video can significantly boost engagement.
The Video Player Page and Personalization
Where Dubb really delivers value is in the video player page that gets sent to your recipients. When you add a contact's email and include personalization text, Dubb generates a custom page with your video, your branding, and a personalized message. It also automatically creates an animated GIF preview that you can paste directly into an email.
The player page itself is clean and functional. You can add your company logo, customize the player and button colors to match your brand, and include various interactive elements like emoji reaction buttons, a Facebook commenting section, and an exit intent popup for one last chance to capture attention.
Even if you only use Dubb to generate those personalized video thumbnails and GIFs for your emails, there's solid value in that alone. Imagine a prospect opening an email and seeing an animated preview of you saying their name with a "Schedule a Meeting" button underneath. That's a compelling touchpoint that stands out in a crowded inbox.
With five stacked codes, you can also set up a custom CNAME so the player page comes from your own domain instead of Dubb's, which adds a nice layer of professionalism.
Calls to Action and Design Customization
Every video in Dubb can have a call to action attached to it. You can link to a Calendly or Acuity scheduling page, add a direct email or phone number, or link to any URL you choose. There's also an exit intent modal that pops up when someone tries to navigate away from your video page.
The design options let you customize the player color and the CTA button color independently. You can also upload a background image for the player page and set your choices as defaults across all videos. One frustration is that changes don't preview in real time — you have to save, then refresh the public page to see the result. And there's no way to control text color separately from the button color, so certain combinations (like yellow buttons) end up with poor readability.
It's worth noting that some of the "integrations" listed for CTAs are really just hyperlinks. The Calendly integration, for example, is simply a field where you paste your Calendly URL. There's no deep API connection or data exchange happening. The same goes for Acuity and SMS — these are links and phone number fields, not true integrations.
CRM, Campaigns, and Automation
Dubb positions itself as a "CRM light" — their own words. You can import contacts manually or connect your Gmail or Outlook account to pull in your address book. From there, you can track interactions with each contact and send emails with embedded videos directly from Dubb.
If you're not comfortable giving Dubb access to all your contacts (and that's a reasonable concern), you can always just add contacts manually. Even if you're doing 10 to 15 personalized videos a day, the manual entry is minimal.
The campaign feature, enabled at three stacked codes, lets you set up automated email sequences. You can create a series of two to four emails that go out on a schedule, triggered by tags. The vision is that someone enters your system via Zapier (though this integration wasn't live at the time of review), gets tagged, and automatically enters a drip campaign with your pre-recorded videos. It's a nice idea, but for automated one-to-many sequences, your existing email service provider will likely do a better job.
What I Don't Like About Dubb
There are a few areas where Dubb falls short. The recording screen is cluttered with Dubb's own social media links and bright buttons, which is distracting when you're trying to focus on making a video. The platform is also heavy-handed with its own exit intent popups and upsell prompts — ironic for a tool that lets you add exit intent popups to your own pages.
The landing page builder is another feature that sounds good on paper but isn't worth your time. It's a basic page builder that's awkward to use, with unintuitive settings (background color is hidden under "decorations" instead of "style" or "colors"), and there's no obvious way to exit the builder without saving. If you already have any landing page tool, stick with that.
More concerning is the way some features are marketed. Listing Calendly, Acuity, and SMS as "integrations" when they're really just URL fields feels misleading. The same goes for the initial handling of the automation feature during this second AppSumo launch, where existing customers were initially told they wouldn't get access to the new features without buying again. They reversed course within a day, but it left a bad taste.
Pricing and the AppSumo Deal Breakdown
The AppSumo deal is structured across five stackable codes at $59 each. One code gets you 100 videos or 10 GB of storage. Two codes bumps that to 200 videos or 20 GB. Three or more codes enables unlimited videos with 10 GB per code, plus the automation features. Five codes adds the custom CNAME for using your own domain.
The storage and video caps feel unnecessarily restrictive. Limiting both the number of videos and the storage amount is double-dipping — pick one or the other. If your videos are short, you should be able to store plenty within the storage limit without hitting an arbitrary video count cap. It feels designed to push you toward stacking more codes.
At three codes ($177), you get the sweet spot of unlimited videos and automation. Five codes ($295) adds the custom domain, which is nice to have but not essential for most users. If you're just sending personalized videos and don't need automation, a single code at $59 is probably sufficient.
Final Verdict: Should You Buy Dubb?
Dubb is a capable tool for its core purpose: sending personalized video emails. The video player pages look professional, the personalized GIF thumbnails are a standout feature, and the tracking and analytics give you useful insight into who's watching your content.
The concerns are less about the software and more about the company behind it. The heavy-handed marketing within the app, the misleading integration claims, and the initial attempt to exclude existing customers from new features all raise questions about how this team will handle things long-term. When you're investing in a lifetime deal, trust in the team matters as much as the feature set.
If you have a genuine need for personalized video outreach — whether that's cold sales emails, client updates, or post-purchase thank-you videos — Dubb delivers real value at the one or three code level. If you don't have a clear use case for one-to-one video, skip this one without any regrets.
